Android 11 Meetup with GDG Philippines

Google launched the Android 11 Beta with pages, videos, and other resources on June 10. They also announced the 11 Weeks of Android. Each week focuses on a specific topic and they will release more content relevant to it. Global developer communities will also host Android 11 Meetups to help developers learn and prepare for the new Android version.

GDG Philippines has invited me to be their speaker for their Android 11 meetup. I've done Android talks and workshops with them before. However, this time it is going be online, which will be the first time for me. I prepared a presentation about Android 11 and other relevant updates for Android developers.

The event was streamed live on YouTube and Facebook. I was a bit nervous because it has been years since the last time I gave a talk but it has been a great experience for me. It feels good to help out GDG Philippines and the Android developer community.

You can check the slides on Speakerdeck. If you need more information about Android 11, you can check out https://developer.android.com/preview.

Ozamiz Android Workshops

I was invited to the 7th ICT Youth Convention in La Salle University (LSU) Ozamiz. This time, I had two whole-day workshops. The convention was composed of three days (February 22-24). The first day was mostly talks while the other two were workshops.

I arrived early in the morning of February 23. My first workshop is an Android App Development Workshop. Instead of the usual letting the participants work on the workshop materials after the intro talk, I demonstrated how to code one by one and ask them to do the same on their machines.

On my second day, I facilitated an Android Game Development Workshop using Love 2D and Lua. We then exported their games to installable APKs after the activities.

Here are some photos of the event:

Trip to Zamboanga

I was at Zamboanga City from June 25 to June 28. It was my second time there. The last time was a day trip when I was a speaker in GDG DevFest Zamboanga back in 2013.

From June 25 to 27, I conducted Android app development training at Universidad de Zamboanga.

On the first training day, I talked about Java and Android Basics and how to install and setup Android Studio. For the next days, our topics included Android app development and install/setup of JDK. On Saturday night, I joined GDG Zamboanga volunteers in their planning for their series of I/O Extended roadshows, the first one of which will be the day after.

I participated in GDG Zamboanga's Google I/O 2015 Extended event on June 28. In the morning, I talked about Google I/O updates, Google Cardboard, Google Developer tools and technologies, and Basic Android App Development. After the talk (and lunch), I went back to Manila.

Baguio Weekend

Celine, Gerardo, Mama Chelle and family, and I spent last weekend (June 20-21) in Baguio City. We arrived in the early morning of June 20 and went straight to Azalea Hotel to rest first.

We woke up early and went to the Centennial Building of University of Baguio (UB) for the Google I/O 2015 Extended Baguio (link). I talked about the new Android updates from I/O.

The slides I used in my talk during Google I/O 2015 Extended Baguio

In the afternoon, we facilitated code labs in UB's computer laboratory. Gerardo was supposed to do the code lab about Google+ signin in Android and I was supposed to facilitate the App Indexing Code Lab but due to technical difficulties, I suggested he do a basic Android workshop and I will do an advanced code lab (Unit Testing). These didn't really work out because the Windows computers do not want to cooperate. We shared tips and answered some questions. I also shared about an upcoming inter-school Android app development competition.

The participants of Google I/O 2015 Extended Baguio

After the event, we had dinner with the organizers and volunteers of GDG Baguio at 50s Diner (in ). Celine, Reymart, Mama Chelle, Gerardo, and I went to the night market before going back to the hotel.

The next day, we woke up early to go to the strawberry farm. We were able to do some strawberry picking. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel and rested. We then had lunch at Cafe by the Ruins before Celine and I went back to Manila.

Trip to Ozamiz City

I was again invited by La Salle University-Ozamiz to be a part of the 6th ICT Youth Convention on January 28-30, 2015.

I arrived in Ozamiz in the morning of January 28. We went to Royal Garden Hotel and had breakfast in The Coffee Lounge while waiting for the rooms to be ready. I went to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, which is just a few steps away from the hotel, for prayers before going to LSU. The cathedral has the largest pipe organ in the country and is the biggest in Mindanao. In LSU, I checked the machines and started the download of the latest version of Android Studio for the afternoon workshop. We went back to the hotel to have lunch at Hukad Sa Golden Cowrie. I ordered Chicken Pandan.

After lunch, we went to LSU. Android Studio has been installed but the download of other components is taking too long so we just used ADT Bundles which were already installed there last year. There were around 30 participants in the Android workshop. I did a talk first about Android apps development. We were already starting with the hands-on when the power went out. It lasted for more than 30 minutes. I talked and demonstrated Google Cardboard, Android Wear (Moto 360), and Chromecast during the blackout. Most of the participants were able to finish the activity.

The next day, I woke up early and we had breakfast at The Coffee Lounge in the hotel. After breakfast, we went to LSU. I was the second speaker for the morning. My talk was "Android: Beyond Phones and Tablets." I discussed Android Wear, Android TV, and Android Auto. I also told them about other innovations like Google Cardboard, Chromecast, and Project Ara.

The slides I used in my talk

We went to Chicken Ati-atihan for lunch. After eating, Sir Harold and other teachers toured me to Fuerte de la Concepcion Y del Triunfo (Cotta). It was an old Spanish fort built to protect the region. We checked the Cotta Museum, Cotta Shrine, and climbed the lighthouse.

Miniature of the Fuerte de la Concepcion Y del Triunfo
We also went to Clarin, Misamis Occidental to try the different flavors of suman in House of Suman and Pasalubong Center. There were a total of 13 flavors. Only 7 flavors were available that day and we were able to try six.

Some of the suman we tried
We went back to LSU campus. After the other speakers finish their talks and workshops, we went to Tangub City to go to Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park. Unfortunately, it is already too dark when we arrived there. We checked out the Highland Chapel Hotel in the compound before going back to Ozamiz. We went to Dahon Boodle and Grill for the Social Nights but we had dinner at Hukad Sa Golden Cowrie in Royal Garden Hotel.

The morning after, I was picked up by Miss Leslyn and Miss Jabie of LSU. We had breakfast at Jollibee before going to the Ozamiz Airport. It was great to visit Ozamiz again. Hopefully, Celine and I can go back there soon to explore the city more.

Android Fundamentals Study Jams

GDG Philippines is organizing a seven-week Android Fundamentals Study Jams on February-March 2015. This is part of the Google Developers Study Jams, free series of global, community-run, in-person study groups. The first jam session is presented in partnership with Udacity and will follow their Android Fundamentals curriculum. This series will be led by certified Google Developer Group facilitators.

Google Developers Study Jams is the first of its kind for Google Developer Groups (GDGs). Last year, GDGs were asked who are interested in hosting these Study Jams. GDG representatives were required to finish Udacity's Android Fundamentals Course and earn the verified certificate from November to December 2014. They will in turn be the ones who will be facilitating the Study Jams in their respective GDG chapters. I signed up for GDG Philippines, finished the course, submitted my final project, and got my verified certificate on January 7, 2015 (It was still January 6 in the US when I got the certificate, thus the date is January 6).

My Verified Certificate of Completion

For the GDG Philippines Android Study Jams, there will be a total of seven Saturday sessions (Every Saturday from February 07 to March 21). The first six sessions will be for the six lessons of the course (one lesson per week). The seventh session will be for the presentation of final projects. To know more, please check the blog post at http://blog.gdgph.org/2015/01/android-fundamentals-study-jams.html. If you are interested in joining the Study Jams sessions, you should sign up early before slots ran out.

December 2014

December 2014 was a period of transition from me. Here are some of the things I did this month.

Ilocos Trip (December 2-3)

We went to Ilocos for the Google Philippines and Philippine Science High School event. I was there with Wayne, Reymart, and Googlers Gail,Chelle, Phillip, and Phil. The first day is for teachers and the second day is for students. Our technical talks were in the afternoon of the second day so we were able to do a quick side trip to Vigan (and eat authentic Vigan empanada) in the morning. In the afternoon, we discussed Chrome Dev Tools (Reymart), Community Mapping (Wayne), and Android (me). I wasn't able to take much pictures. Below is the Google+ story of our trip.

FEU-Makati Talk (December 15)

I was invited to do a talk in FEU-Makati on December 15, 2014. My talk was about Google Developer Technologies. Below is the slides I used during the talk:

Google OFW Event (December 16)

During Blas Ople's Christmas Party for OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers), I helped man the Google Philippines booth. I was in the Google+ booth initially but manned the Hangouts booth most of the time.

Lucky's Wedding (December 20)

It was my first time to attend a wedding and it was Lucky Larga and Jo Anonuevo's church wedding in Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral Cubao.

Celine and I in the church before the wedding of Lucky and Jo

GDays/GCommunities Party (December 20)

After the wedding (and changing clothes), Celine and I went to GDays and the G Communities Christmas Party. We had dinner, Pinoy Henyo games, exchange gifts, and some raffles.

Android Workshops

After Google I/O, we at GDG Philippines have been busy with our events. We've had the Post-I/O Meetup (July 7), Chromecast/Google Cast Meetup (July 23), Polymer Workshop (July 30) and Android Wear Workshop (August 2). GDG Philippines also visited different schools (FEU, ADMU, and NU) for our GDG Campus Roadshow events. Aside from talks about different Google technologies, we usually have Android, Google App Engine, or Google Maps API workshops for our Campus Roadshows.

In Ateneo de Manila University (July 26), we had workshops in Google App Engine and Android. This was co-organized with a Google Student Ambassador from Ateneo (Cristine Chen). I facilitated the morning Android workshop.

The participants in the Android workshop at Ateneo

During the GDG Campus Roadshow in National University, we had talks about Google Chrome, Google Apps, and Motivational/IT Careers. In the afternoon, we had workshops in Google App Engine, HTML5 Game Development, and Android. I facilitated the half-day Android workshop.

Android workshop at NU

We also organized our first Android Wear event, an Android Wear Workshop last August 2. It was a whole-day event held in De La Salle University. Tomorrow, we'll be back in DLSU for the GDG-GSA Campus Roadshow, with Google App Engine workshop in the morning and an afternoon Android Workshop.

Android Wear Workshop

Conducting workshops, even if it's just a half-day event, is tiring but knowing that you have taught the participants something and inspired them takes away all the tiredness. If you are interested in attending events of GDG Philippines, add us in your Google+ circles for updates. You can also invite GDG Philippines in your schools by filling up our Event Request Form and we'll get back to you.

Saturday in Angeles, Pampanga

Carissa Coles, community manager of GBG Angeles, invited GDG Philippines for a developer meetup in Angeles City, Pampanga on June 7.

Wayne and I left around ten in the morning and arrived in Dau Mabalacat Bus Terminal. It rained very hard so we had to wait a few minutes before going to Angeles. We rode a jeep and alighted near Jenra Mall. We walked to Historic Camalig Restaurant for lunch. Our orders Marco's 3-way Tinapa-flavor pizza and Pacencia a Kapampangan mom's sweet recipe pasta for me. The pasta was a bit too sweet.

After lunch, we went to SJH Building in Holy Angel University for the event. I talked about Google Developer Groups (GDGs) and GDG Philippines. Lars Norlander, a GSA from Angeles University Foundation also gave a talk about the Google Student Ambassador (GSA) Program and his experience in the GSA South East Asia Summit last May. Wayne talked about Google Maps, Google Maps APIs, and Google Map Maker. The participants then had hands-on mapping before the event ended.

The attendees of the GDGPH-GBG Angeles Developer Meetup

Carissa, Wayne, and I walked to Holy Rosary Parish Church and a few more steps until we rode a jeep to Marquee Mall. We went Apag Marangle to eat but Carissa and her husband left already. We tried their tilapia and chili frog. After dinner, we decided to have some halo halo at Kabigting's.

Chili Frogs

Kabigting's Halo-Halo, the pride of Arayat

They said that the last bus in Marquee Mall bound to Manila is available only until seven in the evening. Because it is already past that time when we finished eating, we opted to ride another jeep back to Dau Terminal. Before riding a bus, we looked around for pasalubong and could not find stores selling them, except for one. We bought some and rode the bus and went back.
