It's DevFest season once again! DevFests are community-organized events that provide an opportunity for developers to learn about Google technologies and developer products.
We at GDG Philippines organized GDG DevFest Philippines 2014 last October 24. It was held at Henry Sy. Sr. Hall at De La Salle University, Manila. This year, GDG DevFest Philippines was bigger and we had some new features, especially the Code Labs and the Sandbox.
Sandbox
We had booths for GDG Philippines and our sponsors. In the GDG Philippines booths, we demonstrated and asked the participants to try the Android Wear smart watches (LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live, and Moto 360), Cardboard, Chromecast. Most of the time, I was here.
We had two tracks for the talks. The one in the plenary included Material Design, Game Design, Designing for Mobile, and Ingress. The other track included Google Analytics, Google Compute Engine, and Android. There was supposed to be another track but the other speakers are not available.
Google for Entrepreneurs Week
This year's Google for Entrepreneurs (GFE) Week event in Manila was also held during GDG DevFest Philippines 2014. GFE Week is an annual, global celebration of innovators and entrepreneurs. There was a panel of experts and entrepreneurs who will talked about different Google tools for supporting businesses, followed by a Q&A, and networking session. It was held during the afternoon.
The Aftermath
We had more than 472 attendees for GDG DevFest Philippines. This was the highest number of attendees so far for a GDG DevFest Philippines event. There were more than 25% female attendees this year too.
Photos, slides, and more details about the event can be found in the Events Website and in the Google+ Events Page. Thanks again to our speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees!
All of us, except Mama Chelle who went to KK earlier, arrived in Kota Kinabalu International Airport around one in the morning. +Lorna picked us up in the airport and brought us to King Park Hotel where we stayed for the night.
We wake up early in the morning and had breakfast in King Park Cafe. The venue for the DevFest, Wisma Bandaraya, is just two blocks away (around five minutes walk) from the hotel. We met some of the organizers there. I found out about the Ingress Sabah. They have a great cross-faction relationships there. I also got updates about the Shard in KK.
The event started with a speech from the Sabah State Minister of Resource & IT Development and the keynote by Sebastian. Mitch is the first from us to talk. Her topic is about Mobile Trends. After her talk, Mitch, Svet, Loretta and I walked to the nearby mall (Centre Point Sabah) to exchange our money to Ringgit. I also need to buy an adapter and a local sim for mobile data. I bought a Digi sim and loaded some credits to it. The cost for the unli data was a bit expensive than in the Philippines but I think it was worth it.
We went back and Celine's talk about Google Apps for Education is already finished. I sat inside for +Marc Tan's Google ADK/Arduino talk. It was the last talk before lunch. In the afternoon, there were two breakout sessions: App Engine on PHP (by Lorna) and Chrome Extensions. I discussed the basics of Chrome Apps and Extensions development. Below is the presentation I used in my talk.
After that, +Loretta talked about HTML5 Game Development. Lorna then had the closing speech after a few short talks about GSA and Ingress Sabah. Over-all, the event and the food were great!
Mama Chelle, Wayne, Mitch, Svet, Marcus, Loretta, Marc, Celine and I had dinner at Welcome Seafood Restaurant. We enjoyed the different seafood dishes. Because some of us needed to buy shorts and slippers and other things, we went to Centre Point Sabah. We then went to Pasar Malam Sinsuran to buy keychains and other stuff. Afterwards, we had cakes at Secret Recipe before going back to the hotel to rest.
It was a whole-day workshop. Wayne was in charge of the MapUp and I handled the Android Code Lab. In the morning, I taught the basics of Android and Android Studio. Here is the slides I used during the Code Lab:
After lunch, I had a quick talk about the different kinds of views they can use and how to move from one page to another. We tasked them do to anything that they can finish in less than two hours. I roamed around and helped the participants with their questions. After the coding, they were asked to demonstrate their apps and we gave special swags to the apps who found to be promising. I encouraged them to continue developing their apps and to publish it to Google Play later on.
GDG Philippines organized GDG Devfest Women Philippines last March 9, 2013 at Globe Corporate Showroom, Valero Telepark. DevFestW is a community-led event that has technical and non-technical sessions centered around Google developer technologies and platforms. DevFestW is focused specifically on bringing together women in the local developer community to teach, learn, code and network.
